A little background on Wokingham:
During Tudor times, Wokingham was a producer of silk. Rose Street still has some of the houses involved in this cottage industry. In the English Civil War, many houses were destroyed by fire after having been looted for food and other goods. Over 30 buildings - almost one-fifth of the town - were lost in this way. Wokingham Town Hall was built in 1860 in the Victorian Gothic Style, to replace the old Guildhall which had become dilapidated. Now a Grade II* listed building, it originally housed the courtrooms and police station.
